What is coaching?

What is mentoring?

Coaching has its origin in the Socratic dialogues, in that art of Socrates’ maieutic, a method by which the truth is reached through dialogue. According to maieutic, through well-targeted questions, Socrates puts the interlocutor in a position to discover, apparently on his own, the truth.

The term “coach” comes from the English language and means “carriage” and “bus”. Basically, it defines the coaching process as a mean of transporting people from where they are now to where they want to be. It is a mean by which people can take steps forward for the better.

Coaching is a process that facilitates awareness and accessing resources, gaining clarity and achieving the client’s goals.

Why is an awareness-raising framework important? Because the psychologist Carl Jung said that until you transform the unconscious into the conscious, it will control your life and you will call it fate.

In this process, the coach accompanies you through active listening, questions and the use of specific coaching techniques and tools.

Mentoring is a relationship that fosters development with a mentor relevant to the field in which you want to build expertise. The mentor is the person who shares his experiences and skills with the mentee.

A mentoring relationship is generally longer-term, with the mentor being the person who gives you advice, resources, helpful questions to ask yourself, challenges you to become better in your professional area, to progress in career, on medium and long term.

Basically, in a mentoring relationship, the mentor supports the learning, development and progress of the mentee.

Unlike coaching, in a mentoring relationship there is a transfer of know-how between mentor and mentee.

It’s an activity where the mentor shares his best practices that made him successful in a particular area.

What isn’t coaching?

Coaching is not a transfer of know-how, the coach does not teach you, does not tell you what to do, how to do it and with whom to do it.

The coach does not solve your problems, does not “make you well”, the coach is not a guru or a healer.

It is the coaching process that can have an impact on your transformation, on the speed you move from point A to point B, on how you reach your goal.

The client remains responsible for what happens in the process, for his degree of involvement and responsibility.
